Buick has just made its most aggressive pricing move in years. The GL8 Avenir PHEV “Lushang Comfort DG Edition” has officially launched in China at ¥229,900 (approx. $31,700 USD) — making it the most accessible entry point into the GL8 PHEV lineup yet. The new variant is designed specifically to lower the barrier for buyers who want plug-in hybrid luxury without the premium price tag.

Classic GL8 Elegance — Now More Attainable

The GL8 Avenir remains one of the most recognizable luxury MPVs in China. The exterior follows Buick’s PURE Design family language, featuring a sleek, flowing side profile, 18-inch alloy wheels, and the signature “Avenir” script on the B-pillar. Dimensions remain large: 5,219mm long, 1,878mm wide, 1,807mm tall, with a 3,088mm wheelbase — bigger than a Toyota Alphard.

Panoramic Dashboard: Dual 12.3-Inch Screens with CarPlay

The cabin is dominated by a sweeping dual 12.3-inch curved display setup — one for instruments, one for infotainment. The layout is clean and Scandinavian in its minimalism, with white leather surfaces and dark wood-look trim panels. Apple CarPlay is standard, with a digital rear-view mirror mounted overhead.

Executive Entry: Sliding Door, White Leather, Clean Lines

The power sliding door opens to reveal an incredibly refined cabin — white premium leather seats, clean door panels, bright trim, and the illuminated “Avenir” sill plate in blue. It feels like stepping into a business-class cabin.

“Zhenlong” PHEV System: 142km Pure Electric Range

The DG Edition uses a smaller 24.4kWh LFP battery compared to the range-topping model, delivering a still-respectable 142km of CLTC pure electric range. The powertrain is Buick’s proprietary “Zhenlong” (True Dragon) PHEV system, combining:

  • A 1.5T turbocharged mild-hybrid engine with deep Miller-cycle combustion
  • A 160kW electric motor with 330N·m of torque
  • Peak motor efficiency of 97.8%
  • A 2-speed DHT (Dedicated Hybrid Transmission)

Why This Is Big News

At ¥229,900 ($31,700 USD), the GL8 Avenir PHEV DG Edition undercuts most of its PHEV MPV competition significantly. For context, the Toyota Alphard PHEV starts around ¥530,000 in China. The GL8 gives you similar — and in some ways superior — space, tech, and luxury for less than half the price. This is a major value play from General Motors China.
