Wuling’s Xingguang L Black Warrior Edition is a sharper, darker take on the brand’s new mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV, and the visual package is the first thing that makes it stand out. The blacked-out bodywork, red brake calipers and large dark wheels give the car a more serious presence than a standard family SUV, while the underlying product story still centers on value, practicality and long-distance usability. For readers tracking China’s fast-moving new-energy market, this is one of those launches that looks simple at first glance but says a lot about how manufacturers are trying to make familiar hardware feel more desirable.
According to Autohome, Wuling released the official images of the Black Warrior Edition on June 23. The regular Xingguang L is already on pre-sale with three trims, a list price of RMB 122,800-142,800, and a pre-sale incentive price of RMB 117,800-137,800. At the current exchange rate, that works out to approximately $17,328-$20,270 (RMB 117,800-137,800). That is not official overseas pricing, of course; it is only a useful conversion for English-language readers who want to understand where the model sits in the Chinese market.

The Black Warrior Edition is clearly designed to sell attitude as much as specifications. The front end uses an AGS active grille, which can adjust opening size depending on driving conditions to balance cooling and efficiency. The lighting setup includes LED low/high beams, automatic headlights, turn-signal assist lamps, headlight-height adjustment and delayed shutoff. Even the charging port has its own illumination, which sounds minor until you imagine using the car at night or in a dark garage. These are the sort of small details that make an everyday vehicle feel more thought through.

A family SUV with real size and real space
Where the Xingguang L becomes more than a styling exercise is in its packaging. Wuling places it in the mid-size-to-large SUV bracket with a body size of 4,980 mm long, 1,930 mm wide and 1,760 mm tall, riding on a 2,950 mm wheelbase. It uses a five-door, six-seat layout, so the car is being presented as a genuinely family-oriented machine rather than a style-first crossover. That matters because a lot of visually aggressive special editions eventually turn out to be no more useful than the base car. This one keeps the proportions, seating and cabin purpose firmly intact.
The 20-inch ten-spoke black wheels are a good example of how the styling is working with the underlying shape instead of fighting it. The car still looks like a practical three-row model, but the darker finish, silver accents and red calipers push it closer to the sporty-luxury end of the spectrum. In a market where families often want something that feels both sensible and a little aspirational, that combination can be effective.

What sits underneath the style package
Mechanically, the Xingguang L Black Warrior Edition uses the same plug-in hybrid formula across the lineup. The engine is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated unit with 78 kW of output and 130 Nm of torque, paired with an E-CVT transmission. The front-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor produces 170 kW and 280 Nm, which is enough to give the car a respectable 0-100 km/h time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h. For a family-oriented electrified SUV, that is a sensible balance: quick enough to feel modern, but not pitched as a performance machine.
Efficiency figures also matter here. Wuling quotes a WLTC fuel consumption figure of 5.9 L/100 km and a CLTC charge-depleting fuel consumption figure of 4.9 L/100 km. The battery is a 37.9-kWh LFP pack, branded by Wuling as its Shenlian battery, and the CLTC pure-electric range reaches 260 km. Combined range is listed at 1,260 km. Those numbers are important because they tell the buyer that this is not a token plug-in hybrid meant to save a few liters once in a while; it is built to cover actual commuting and longer family trips with real electric-only usefulness.
Charging, discharging and everyday usability
The fast-charging side is equally notable. Wuling says the battery supports 3C DC charging and can go from 30% to 80% in 15 minutes. That is the kind of figure that changes how a car fits into daily life, especially for buyers who do not want plug-in hybrids to feel like a compromise between EV and gasoline ownership. Slow charging is rated at 6.6 kW, with a 20% to 100% charge time of 6.3 hours. The car also supports 3.3 kW vehicle-to-load output, which means it can power equipment during camping, outdoor work or other off-grid use cases.
That broadens the car’s role beyond a commuter. Wuling is effectively selling the Xingguang L as a practical, modern family machine that can do school runs, weekend trips and light outdoor duty without needing the buyer to think too hard about range anxiety or charging logistics. In a segment where many plug-in hybrids are still built around compromise, that is a useful differentiator.
Bottom line
The Black Warrior Edition is not a new technical platform or a radical powertrain experiment. It is a visual and market-positioning move, but that does not make it unimportant. Special editions often exist to sharpen attention around a model that already has solid fundamentals, and that seems to be exactly what Wuling is doing here. By combining darker styling, decent size, six-seat practicality, strong electric range and quick fast charging, the Xingguang L Black Warrior Edition tries to look more premium without abandoning the value formula that made the car relevant in the first place.
For buyers, the real question is whether the darker look adds enough emotional pull to matter at the showroom. Judging by the official images, Wuling has at least given the Xingguang L a more distinctive face. For a family-focused plug-in hybrid in China, that can be enough to move it from “useful” to “memorable”.
