Deepal S05 Refresh Adds Lidar and Hidden-Handle Tweaks

Deepal released official images of the refreshed S05 on July 22, and the photos tell a clear story: this is a compact SUV update built around hardware and daily usability rather than a dramatic visual reset. The car keeps the same overall silhouette, but it adds a roof-mounted lidar unit, semi-hidden door handles and the kind of driver-assistance signaling that suggests Deepal wants the S05 to look a little more serious about smart driving.

For readers following China’s EV market, that matters because the S05 sits in a crowded space where models increasingly compete on sensors, cockpit software and range efficiency instead of styling alone. Deepal’s approach here is not to reinvent the car. It is to sharpen the existing formula and make the refresh read as more capable without abandoning the model’s familiar shape.

What changed in the exterior

The refreshed S05 does not abandon the current design language. The car still uses the same compact SUV profile, a short nose and a stretched wheelbase that gives it a slightly more premium stance than its footprint would suggest. The biggest visible changes are on the roof and the side profile. A lidar module now sits above the windshield, while the door handles move to a semi-hidden design that looks cleaner than a traditional pull handle but stops short of a fully flush treatment.

Deepal also keeps the brand’s blue driver-assistance lighting cues, which are easy to miss in a static image but important as a visual signal. The effect is familiar to Chinese buyers who now associate blue marker lights with higher-spec assisted-driving hardware. In other words, the refresh is trying to communicate capability at a glance, not only in the spec sheet.

The rest of the bodywork stays close to the current car. The headlamp signature remains recognizably Deepal, the roofline keeps its coupe-like sweep, and the overall proportions still read as a modern compact crossover rather than a boxy utility vehicle. That restraint is probably intentional. A heavily reworked body would have risked distracting from the hardware message.

Size and packaging stay unchanged

According to the source material, the refreshed S05 keeps its existing dimensions at 4,620 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,600 mm tall, with a 2,880 mm wheelbase. That wheelbase figure is the one worth paying attention to. It is what gives the S05 a more spacious, planted feel than many compact SUVs, and it helps explain why Deepal can pitch the car as a practical family EV even though the footprint stays relatively tidy for city use.

For buyers, that means the refresh is unlikely to change the basic ownership experience. Cabin room, parking ease and the car’s street presence should all remain broadly familiar. What changes is the perception of the car as a more tech-forward product. With lidar on the roof and a cleaner set of handles, the S05 starts to look like a model that is moving up the smart-EV ladder without moving into a larger segment.

Powertrain choices remain broad

The other important point is that Deepal is not narrowing the drivetrain menu. The refreshed S05 continues to offer both range-extended and pure-electric versions. The range-extended model uses a 1.5-liter engine rated at 72 kW paired with a 175 kW rear motor and a 28.39 kWh battery pack. Deepal quotes 215 km of CLTC electric range and 1,310 km of combined range for that version.

The EV version keeps a 200 kW rear motor and is offered with 56.12 kWh and 68.82 kWh CATL battery packs. Those configurations are quoted for 520 km and 620 km of CLTC range, and Deepal says the car can move from 30 percent to 80 percent charge in 15 minutes. That is an important detail because it places the S05 in the same conversation as other Chinese compact EVs that sell on charging convenience as much as on outright range.

Why this refresh matters

There is a broader pattern here. Chinese EV brands are increasingly using model refreshes to add sensor hardware, tweak door hardware and improve perceived intelligence without waiting for a full generational change. That lets them respond more quickly to shifting buyer expectations and to an assisted-driving race that still rewards visible hardware as much as software claims.

Deepal’s official S05 photos fit that pattern well. The car does not need a new body to make the point. It needs enough visual evidence to show that the old package has been updated with higher-spec tech and a slightly cleaner exterior presentation. For shoppers, that can be enough to keep a compact SUV on the radar even when the market is moving quickly.

For context, the current S05 is listed at RMB 119,900 to RMB 149,900, so the refresh appears aimed at protecting a familiar price-and-feature balance rather than chasing a brand-new segment. If Deepal keeps the same cabin packaging while raising the perceived tech ceiling, the S05 should remain a credible option for buyers who want a compact EV or EREV that looks smart without going oversized.
