China’s EV transition is now visible in the national vehicle registry, not just monthly sales charts. Autohome cites Ministry of Public Security data showing 4.76 billion motor vehicles and 3.71 billion automobiles nationwide by the end of June 2026.
The new-energy vehicle parc reached 48.97 million units, equal to 13.19% of China’s automobile total and up 2.92 percentage points from a year earlier. Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 33.675 million of those NEVs.

First-half new-energy registrations reached 5.195 million units, or 49.42% of newly registered cars, up 4.45 percentage points year over year.
Why it matters
That registration share is important because it measures vehicles entering the road fleet, not just showroom demand. It shows NEVs moving from headline growth into the installed base of Chinese transport.

China is approaching a point where electrified vehicles are not simply winning new sales; they are changing the composition of the national car parc.
