BMW is keeping V8 power in the next X5 performance lineup while preparing electrified M variants above it. Autohome reports that the new BMW X5 M60 has been photographed testing ahead of an expected 2027 debut.

The prototype shows larger front cooling openings and an illuminated M badge in the D-pillar, a design touch first associated with BMW’s new electric i3 family.

The next BMW X5 M60 is expected to launch in 2027.

The X5 M60 is expected to use a 4.4T twin-turbo V8 producing around 448 kW and 800 Nm. BMW is also expected to offer a full X5 M with a V8-electric plug-in hybrid system.

Why it matters

BMW is splitting the difference between brand heritage and regulation. Keeping a V8 M60 preserves familiar performance appeal, while the future X5 M hybrid can handle the next step in output and emissions strategy.
