Volkswagen is making its boldest move yet in the Chinese EV market. The SAIC-Volkswagen ID.ERA 9X - a massive extended-range electric SUV - opens pre-sales on March 30, 2026, with a full market launch set for April.

Massive Size, Bold Presence
At 5,207mm long, 1,997mm wide, and 1,810mm tall with a 3,070mm wheelbase, the ID.ERA 9X is firmly in large SUV territory. The exterior features a sleek floating roofline, hidden door handles, full-width LED light bars front and rear, and an illuminated VW logo at the back.

Interior: Dual Screens, 6 Seats, and a Reclining Second Row
Step inside and you get a minimalist cabin featuring dual 15.6-inch linked screens, ambient lighting, HUD, and wireless charging. The 6-seat layout includes a second row that reclines fully flat. Rear passengers get a 21.4-inch ceiling entertainment screen.

EREV Powertrain: 400km+ Pure Electric Range
The ID.ERA 9X uses an extended-range electric (EREV) setup - EA211 range extender (105kW) paired with dual electric motors (160kW front + 240kW rear) and a 65.2kWh ternary lithium battery. Pure electric CLTC range exceeds 400km.
LiDAR + Momenta R7 AI: No HD Maps Needed
The ID.ERA 9X features LiDAR and runs the Momenta R7 reinforcement learning world model - capable of highway, urban, and point-to-point navigation assistance without HD maps.

Why This Matters
VW has been losing ground in China to local EV brands. The ID.ERA 9X is a direct counter-attack - designed in China, for China, with specs that match or beat homegrown rivals like the Li Auto L9 and AITO M9. Pre-sales start March 30. Pricing is expected in the ¥300,000-¥400,000 range (approx. $41,400-$55,200 USD). Watch this space.
