Volkswagen Sets June 25 Launch for Magotan and Tayron L Plug-In Hybrids

FAW-Volkswagen is preparing to expand its electrified lineup in China with two closely related plug-in hybrids. The Magotan PHEV sedan and Tayron L PHEV SUV are scheduled to go on sale on June 25, combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a single electric motor.

Both models have opened for presales from RMB 174,900, or approximately US$25,800 at the latest available exchange rate. These dollar figures are approximate currency conversions for reference and do not represent official U.S. pricing.

Presale pricing puts both models in the same starting position

The Magotan PHEV is being offered during presales at RMB 174,900 to RMB 199,900, equivalent to roughly US$25,800 to US$29,500. The Tayron L PHEV has a narrower provisional range of RMB 174,900 to RMB 186,900, or about US$25,800 to US$27,500.

Final prices and complete trim details are expected at the June 25 launch. As always with China-market pricing, local incentives, taxes and dealer programs can affect the effective transaction price.

Magotan PHEV: long-range sedan with a three-screen cabin

The Magotan PHEV adopts FAW-Volkswagen’s latest family design language. Its IQ.LIGHT matrix headlights connect visually with an illuminated grille strip and glowing Volkswagen badge, while blue trim and PHEV-specific details distinguish it from the gasoline-powered version.

The sedan measures 4,990 mm long, 1,854 mm wide and 1,491 mm tall, with a 2,872-mm wheelbase. Inside, it uses a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15-inch central touchscreen. Upper trims add an 11.6-inch passenger entertainment display, and the infotainment system runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8155 platform.

A three-screen layout is available, including an optional display for the front passenger.

The plug-in hybrid system combines a 95-kW 1.5-liter turbo engine with a 145-kW electric motor. A 22-kWh battery gives the Magotan PHEV a claimed 127 km (79 miles) of CLTC electric range. Volkswagen quotes a combined CLTC range of 1,510 km (938 miles).

Tayron L PHEV: SUV practicality and expanded driver assistance

The Tayron L PHEV carries over the basic appearance of the combustion model and will be available with an R-Line styling package. It also features IQ.LIGHT matrix lighting with adaptive high- and low-beam functions.

The Tayron L PHEV shares its core powertrain with the Magotan PHEV but offers a taller SUV body.

Dimensions are 4,695 mm long, 1,866 mm wide and 1,678 mm tall, supported by a 2,791-mm wheelbase. The dashboard follows the sedan’s formula with a 10.3-inch instrument display, 15-inch center screen and available 11.6-inch passenger screen, again using the Snapdragon 8155 chip.

Volkswagen’s IQ.Pilot driver-assistance package supports adaptive cruise control, lane centering, assisted lane changes and responses to vehicles cutting into the lane. Automated parking and remote-control parking are also included among the listed functions.

The Tayron L uses the same 95-kW engine and 145-kW motor combination with a 22-kWh battery. Depending on the version, its CLTC electric range is listed at 143 km or 145 km (89-90 miles), while combined range is rated at 1,432 km or 1,439 km (890-894 miles).

Why the launch matters

These models show how Volkswagen is repositioning plug-in hybrids in China: larger batteries, meaningful electric-only commuting range and technology-rich cabins, while retaining a gasoline engine for long trips. The shared starting price also gives buyers a straightforward choice between a conventional midsize sedan and a family-oriented SUV.

Takeaway: The final launch will determine whether FAW-Volkswagen keeps the aggressive presale pricing and how equipment differs across trims. On paper, the Tayron L’s longer electric range and the Magotan’s 1,510-km combined claim make both more capable than short-range plug-in hybrids of the previous generation.
